How Long Does at Home Teeth Whitening Take?

Looking for the best do it yourself teeth whitening methods? Those who want to try and whiten their teeth at home themselves vs. buying an over the counter whitening kit or making an appointment with a professional dentist are often the type of people who like to do things themselves whenever possible. These people figure that if they can use a few ingredients they already have in the cabinet or go to their local drugstore to buy something, then why not?

What is important to understand is that there is a difference between what is sold at a local drugstore and what a dentist uses when they offer professional teeth whitening services. Without professional supervision, there is a greater chance of a mistake and possible harm to the individual.

If you are currently wondering whether or not you should whiten your teeth, doing a little research first in order to fully understand the options is a wise idea.

At home whitening options and time frame

While the results are going to vary depending on the whitening method chosen, those who choose to whiten their teeth at home can expect their teeth to improve by about two shades. The following are some of the more popular options for whitening one's teeth, along with an approximate time for how long it takes the process to work. It is important to note that none of these will be nearly as effective as an in-office treatment at our practice.

Do it yourself teeth whitening options:

  • Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste requires brushing one’s teeth with the paste for five days in order to see the teeth two shades lighter (Changes can last up to two months)
  • Strawberry paste requires that the paste be left on the teeth for seven minutes a few times a week to produce minimal results
  • Apple cider vinegar requires brushing one’s teeth using the vinegar for a whole month to see minimal results

Over the counter options teeth whitening options:

  • Special toothpaste requires brushing one’s teeth with minimal results that will last as long as the individual continues to use the toothpaste
  • Teeth whitening strips require one to wear strips for a certain amount of time, usually 30 to 60 minutes to produce teeth that are up to three shades lighter
