Sit Back and Relax with Sedation Dentistry

The stereotype of dentist in most movies or TV series always involves the patient being in immense pain. This false idea of a painful dental visit plants the seeds of fear in patients' minds at a young age. The truth is that sedation dentistry can make a dental visit comfortable and painless.

Sedation Dentistry

Contrary to belief, the sedation process will not always involve falling asleep during the procedure. In many situations, the dentist will only need to administer a small amount to remove the pain during a procedure.

The American Dental Association, ADA, states, “The administration of local anesthesia, sedation, and general anesthesia is an integral part of dental practice.” Since sedation dentistry is a common part of many dental procedures, a professional dental office will know the right amount for each individual.

The fear of visiting the dentist can lead to large amounts of anxiety in patients. Regardless of age, all people are susceptible to the anxiety of visiting the dentist. In a case of dental anxiety stopping a patient from receiving the proper dental care, a dentist can use sedation dentistry to relax a patient.

A proper dental office will provide a relaxing and comforting environment for the patient. To help ease any nerves, patients should ask all questions at a consultation before the appointment. Parents can also ask to bring their children to the office before the appointment. Upon the actual appointment, the child can feel familiar with the office.

The only time an individual needs to be completely put under is an extreme case or dental emergency. An effective way to deal with anxiety about visiting the dentist is by asking any questions.

Sedation dentistry and dental anxiety

Dental anxiety is more common than people may realize. A patient struggling with dental anxiety may not share this fact with others due to embarrassment. However, the ADA has a few tips for dealing with dental anxiety. These include:

  • Speaking to others about anxiety
  • Choosing a time for the dental appointment that is not stressful
  • Wearing headphones during the procedure

Administering sedation dentistry does not hurt the patient and does not normally require a large amount of anesthesia. Only trained professionals are allowed to administer anesthesia or other sedation drugs for a procedure. As there are a variety of sedation methods and substances available, dentists will use the best option for the situation.

In other cases, a patient will not be able to feel any pain and still have an understanding of what is happening. While a patient may have difficulty moving in this situation, it may comfort people to not be completely under during a procedure.

If you or a loved one harbors anxiety toward the dentist, sedation dentistry may be the answer. In many cases, even just talking about the anxiety can help to alleviate it. Do not let the false stigma of dental checkups lead you to a life of pain and unhealthy teeth.
